2-1-1
What is 2-1-1?
In July 2000 the Federal Communications Commission assigned the three-digit dialing code 2-1-1 for the exclusive purpose of providing widespread access to community information and referral services. Once described as “elegant in its simplicity,” 2-1-1 is an easy to remember phone number linking callers in need to available health and human service programs. Currently, there are 2-1-1 systems operating in 46 states reaching roughly more than 240 million Americans or approximately 80% of the US population.
2-1-1 is a foundational enhancement of this nation’s long-trusted and respected Information and Referral (I&R) industry. Professional I&R specialists assess callers’ needs, determine their options, direct them to appropriate programs and services, provide culturally appropriate support, intervene in crisis situations, and advocate for the caller when necessary
2-1-1 Kings County will help bring together organizations in the community to better serve the residents of Kings County. Key organizations representing different professionals, demographics, and causes will be able to provide information for the 2-1-1 database to better serve their clients. 2-1-1 Kings County will also become a helpful starting point for a county with small fragmented rural communities that may not be as connected as bigger cities. Under a simple, easy to remember, three digit number, updated information will be kept under national standards. The call will be free, available 24/7, and the community will also have a new tool in responding to disasters in the area.
